09/17/2009
October 1, 2009 Fall MFVA Meeting
at the Camden International Film Festival
"Local Stories, Global Impact"
Maine Media Workshops, Rockport Maine
(September 16, 2009) Rockport, ME - The next meeting of the Maine Film and Video Association is scheduled for 4:30PM Thursday, October 1st, 2009 at the Maine Media Workshops in Rockport and features a dynamic panel discussion from a number of talented artists working in nonfiction. Represented on the panel will be films featured at the Camden International Film Festival, which opens the same night. CONVENTION, the street level view of the Democratic National Convention, OCTOBER COUNTRY, the Silverdocs award-winning examination of one family's struggles in a dying town and THE RIVALS, the tale of rival Maine football teams from 'different sides of the tracks'. Also on the panel will be Kirsten Johnson, guest faculty from the Maine Media Workshops whose work as a documentary DP and director is known worldwide. The panel will be moderated by Louise Rosen, international sales agent and Managing Director of Louise Rosen, Ltd.
The meeting will be held in Union Hall (the brick building on the harbor at 2 Central St., Rockport, Gallery Entrance). The Workshops will also offer dinner for all participants beginning at 6PM. Charge is $10. Please RSVP to
kanelewis@aol.com as soon as possible.
The theme of the panel is Local Stories, Global Impact and the focus is on how even the smallest story can reach a wide audience. One of the great attributes of the documentary form is its ability to examine the microcosm and reveal the macrocosm.
In Convention, AJ Schnack turned his cameras on the every day people in Denver to tell the story of one of the biggest events of the decade, the 2008 Democratic National Convention. How will this film play internationally with such a direct connection to the US?
October Country's directors Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher have seen their story of a working class family resonate globally - it's already been invited to festivals in more than 6 countries.
All are welcome. Free for members and students; $5 for non-members.
The MFVA meeting will be followed by the Opening Night of the Camden International Film Festival (October 1 - 4). Opening night will feature a special New England Premiere of CONVENTION.
